Dear Friends,
Intermezzo is the second song of Schumann’s Eichendorff Liederkreis.
I’m so happy to offer you my new recording:
Your wondrous, blessed image
Is deep within my heart,
At every moment, gladly
Gazing up at me.
My heart sings to itself
A lovely old song
Which rises in the breeze
And hurries to your side.

Intermezzo
Dein Bildnis wunderselig
Hab’ ich im Herzensgrund,
Das sieht so frisch und fröhlich
Mich an zu jeder Stund’.
Mein Herz still in sich singet
Ein altes, schönes Lied,
Das in die Luft sich schwinget
Und zu dir eilig zieht.
Height and depth go together. In my heart’s ground, the virgin soil from which it springs, is the image of my beloved; the lovely old song which sings in my heart rises to seek her out.
We live at the intersection of two bars: one vertical, the other horizontal. On the horizontal, is our time; on the vertical, what is beyond time.
Tradition is involved with both dimensions: on the one hand, it is the passing on on insight from teacher to student (horizontal); on the other, the direct contact of each link in the chain with eternity.
The community we need so desperately is not produced by propinquity; it is not just the movement of energy through beings who are adjacent. It is the drawing near of something higher. As an eternal image wings closer to the earth, community emerges in response. So long as those who love this image remain true to it, they form its body on the horizontal plane; this is community. When their love fails, when they cease to be open to the image, their community becomes a herd.
It’s for this reason that, in seeking community, we must above all seek truth. We must seek that face which gazes up at us in the depths of the heart.
Thank you so much.
With every good wish,
Ishmael
