Dear Friends,
A folk song I have loved for many years…
The Cuckoo
arranged and performed by Ishmael Wallace
Oh, the cuckoo is a pretty bird, she sings as she flies.
She brings us good tidings, she tells us no lies.
She sucks the white flowers for to keep her voice clear,
And the more she singeth cuckoo, the summer draweth near.
As I was a-walking and a-talking one day,
I met my true lover as he came that way.
Oh, the meeting was a pleasure, but the courting was a woe,
For I found him false-hearted; he would kiss me and go.
If I was a scholar and could handle a pen,
I would write to my lover and to all roving men.
I would tell them of the grief and woe that attend on their lies;
I would bid them have pity on the flower when it dies.
