Encouragement
Dear Friends,
I’m so happy to share with you…
Gamlangjai [Encouragement]
Music and lyrics by Rittiporn Insawang (born 1965)
arranged and performed by Ishmael Wallace, tenor and pianist
In times of discouragement, I only ask for one person to think of me and care for me.
In times of gloom, I only ask for someone to comfort me.
On desolate days with hope gone astray, who can help me to fill this emptiness?
Who can give me the will on this long road to fight again?
Encouragement, where will it come from? Please give nourishment to my dreams!
To give vigor to life, to light the fire of hope.
Encouragement, where will it come from? Please give nourishment to me.
Like drops of rain from the distant sky, to moisten the dry earth.
(translation from the Thai by IW)
Like drops of rain from the distant sky…
Though wants and needs may be confused, we have needs; we need our daily bread, bread of grain, bread of love.
Where we may go wrong is in our understanding of its source. If we think the source here or there — in parents, children, friends; in the eyes of our beloved, our work — deep within us remains a hungry ghost, a being of distended belly and pencil-thin throat.
This throat opens as we cease to confine the source to here or there — as we come to see the here and there as vessels of the ever-present.
Dear friends, thank you so much for reading, for listening, for your support — drops of rain from the ever-present heavens!
With every good wish for the New Year —
Ishmael
