I and me
Dear Friends,
In this beautiful teaching, Father Anthony de Mello draws an important distinction. The I is not the me — is not this or that; is not, for example, Ishmael Wallace, born 1971. One’s blessedness1, too, is not this or that — is not any created thing in particular.
The me emerges from the I, as a kind of abstraction; things happen to me, “they” do things to me, but I am.
