In last week’s Castalia I wrote of “the mouths of earth”, an image from Look Homeward, Angel, Thomas Wolfe’s first novel; I wrote that, to escape these mouths, we flee to the clouds.
This morning, I am so happy, as the great ship of his second, Of Time and the River, begins to move out from the quay, to find flight to the clouds emerge as a theme:
