Dear Friends,

It has been inspiring these past few weeks to contemplate a poem by Rilke:

Pont du Carrousel

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 — 1926)

The sightless man who stands upon the bridge,

Gray as the stone which marks a nameless kingdom,

He is perhaps that thing, forever constant,

'Round which the constellations make their circle,

The quiet center of the starry wheel.

For nothing else around him holds its form.

He is the righteous one, immovable,

Set down among a thousand crooked ways —

The gloomy entrance to the underworld,

Unheeded by a superficial race.

From The Book of Images (1902) — translation by IW

The original:

in viele wirre Wege hingestellt;

der dunkle Eingang in die Unterwelt

bei einem oberflächlichen Geschlechte.
